Where were you born, and where do you live now?

I was born in Ventura, California, and currently live in Oxnard, California.
a tiny Northwestern Pennsylvania town: Franklin, PA. I now live on the Gulf Coast of Florida just 4 miles from the beach.

Where are your favourite waters?

My absolutely Fave Break is my HOMEBREAK Mondos and Faria Beach, in Ventura, California…the good old Pacific Ocean.

Would you please share a favourite water memory or two?

Fave moment in the ocean has to be in the 1960’s, while surfing the Point ( now called C St. ) with my BFF. This adorable cute blonde tan dude who I’d been ‘checking out’ was hangin’ off the outside. Next thing I know while making a nice turn this dude is right there hits me with his board while he keeps going as I’m knocked on my ass losing my board ( this is before anybody had ever heard of a leash). I had some choice words & hand gestures, got out furious, told my BFF “ I’m gonna marry that *** & make him regret doing that!”  And yes years later we got married & the rest is history!

How do you incorporate nature in your life, and the way you make a living?

I’m retired from a career in the fitness industry. I workout outdoors everyday & become one with nature everytime I’m in the water surfing my butt off!

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do cuz I STILL GOT STOKE! Surfing is a way of life… difficult to explain but I’m totally in till it ends!

What happens when you don’t have time for nature?
If I can’t do my outdoors power walking/hiking and surfing, I become one mean old lady! Seriously. Being outside is home to me!

Could you please share a time or experience where you felt lost in the crowd, like a tiny, insignificant drop?

Can’t remember feeling lost in a crowd although being in the ocean catching waves is like being a small drop in the sea.
The vastness is mind-boggling. Being a Team Betty Surfer comes also with a fresh view of ocean respect.

How did you turn that around, and how did you get back to feeling like you were a whole Ocean in a Drop?Meeting Donna, owner & designer of Betty Belts several years ago brought to me her stoke on keeping our Oceans Blue. Donna & her husband David are very involved in the community & support clean Oceans. Her approach & all that she does promoting her love of our oceans challenged me to be more aware & more involved.

Is there anything bothering you about the whole eco /green/conservation thing at the moment?

I am amazed at our oceans & how the ocean also cleans itself. I think this is not stressed enough nor given much attention. Nature always finds a way! I believe people with good intentions are not always the answer. Just sayin’

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Being a soul surfer at heart brings me great joy & peace. When I’m surfing it’s like everything else just disappears. It’s the best drug ever! Getting out of the car sizing up the waves & conditions is always different everytime. Paddling out is exciting & I feel always feel those little butterflies in my stomach for what’s to come. After that 1st wave comes a calm. Being in those many drops of water is heaven on earth!

Ocean in a Drop California x Blue Mind

Ocean in a Drop : A series of illustrations by Candace Loy, with each water drop shape filled with sea life and the life that water supports, of a country or state (e.g., California). The bigger vision is to use portions of profits from the sale of beautiful and unique merchandise, to contribute to local marine, freshwater education, research and conservation initiatives in the region depicted by the drop.

#BlueMind is a movement started by Dr Wallace J Nichols, who is also a successful turtle conservation researcher. He has done collaborations with many people including neuroscientists, to show the positive effects of being around water, on the brain.

Not only is there an increasing number of organizations supporting people in overcoming PTSD and other debilitating circumstances through water-based therapy like surfing and swimming; his message is to encourage as many people to reconnect and strengthen their bonds with water, and be inspired as a result to take care of waters across our blue planet.

Combining neuroscience, honouring emotions and using it to create more beneficial solutions for our planet and the life she supports. Here are some of his talks on neuroconservation.
